Ancient Methods of Midrash: Searching the Scriptures for Deeper Meaning
Dr. Anne Davis has re-created ancient methods of midrash that people of the first century used to search the Scriptures for deeper meaning. Authors of the New Testament used these methods. Distinguishing the Gospel of John from the Synoptic Gospels
The Gospel of John presents an interesting challenge. Why is this gospel so different from the others? One possible explanation lies in the historical situation at the time of its composition, which this course examines briefly. However, the lecture focuses primarily on ancient Hebraic literary devices and methods of midrash, intentionally used by the original author to give a deeper intended meaning. You too will explore the rich understanding that lies below the surface and leads to exciting discussion.

The Book of Hebrews and its Reliance on the Old Testament
The Hebraic nature of the Book of Hebrews is so strong that Martin Luther even considered removing it from the New Testament canon. Yet this book will come alive as you explore its Hebraic foundations, which recent scholarship has unfolded for today's students. Its ancient author drew heavily upon the Hebrew Scriptures, and you too will see the close relationship between the two testaments.
